A laboratory on the art of listening through dancing and vocalising
This laboratory emerges from an injury to my vocal apparatus and from a deep concern about the constant attack on our capacity for difficult, fragile and sensitive listening. After years of exploring the limits of the voice as a choreographic practice, I had to stop screaming as I used to and learn to listen in a different way. Since then, I have been investigating the invention of imaginary listening prostheses: acoustic trumpets, funnels, membranes, ducts and resonant cavities that grow from the body and shift listening towards the bones, the skin, the organs, the breath and movement.
Inspired by Leonora Carrington’s The Hearing Trumpet, the laboratory proposes collectively crafting these poetic devices in order to rehearse other ways of perceiving, thinking and relating to one another. It is not only about representing imaginary anatomies, but about inhabiting them, allowing them to communicate with us until they transform the way we move, sound, and where and how we place our attention.
We will work with voice, dance and writing as inseparable listening practices. We will explore the vocal apparatus from a physiological perspective and, at the same time, as a territory of fiction where resonance, reverberation, amplification, echo and vocal transmission can be experienced bodily before being conceptually understood.
Each session will focus on one or more acoustic trumpets, echo practices, resonant readings, ecosensory mappings and delirious conversations.
This laboratory is addressed to dancers, performers, musicians, singers and anyone interested in exploring the voice as a practice of listening.

Veza Fernández is a choreographer, dancer and researcher based in Vienna. Her work lies at the intersection of dance, voice, writing and performance, exploring listening as an aesthetic, political and affective practice. Through a choreopoetic investigation into imaginary anatomy, resonance and bodily imagination, she develops performative devices that invite us to inhabit the body as a space of transformation and relation.
She holds a Master’s degree in Choreography from DAS Graduate School (Amsterdam) and has presented her work at international venues and festivals such as Tanzquartier Wien, brut Wien, Sophiensæle (Berlin), deSingel (Antwerp), Gesnerallee (Zurich), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Dansa Metropolitana (Barcelona) and Impulse Festival (Düsseldorf). Her most recent works include Suspírame Lira and Chantal, el cuerpo es un texto que anhela perspectiva, works that intertwine anatomy, fiction, singing and queer thought through a deeply embodied practice.
