International residencies: Changing Spaces Viena – Barcelona

Changing Spaces is a bilateral artist-in-residence exchange program in which artists work in shifts through contemporary dance and performance. This program was initiated by artists from the Im_flieger space in Vienna to promote artistic research, production, mobility, as well as discursive and practical exchange for national and international cooperation, while simultaneously strengthening local developments. Im_flieger has been developing this program since 2010.

During residencies lasting from 2 to 4 weeks, an intensive exchange with the respective local contexts is proposed. It is based on the simple idea of exchange and mutual use of existing resources such as space, organizational knowledge, and artistic potential. Im_flieger Vienna has cooperated with various international and national cultural actors, as well as artist initiatives or cultural centers, since 2000.

In 2023, the Changing Spaces Vienna-Barcelona cooperation between Im_flieger and nunart began, developing a specific program that connects the spaces and the people who shape them into a fruitful dialogue of artistic and human knowledge exchange.

Im_flieger Vienna is an artist initiative that, since 2000, has played a decisive role in creating open public spaces for contemporary dance, performance, and transdisciplinary art. It is a project by artists for artists: a research center and development laboratory based in Vienna. The focus lies on local, national, and international networks at artistic and structural levels, process-oriented production and publication, artistic discourse, and research.

Im_flieger supports the development of new artistic production formats that transcend boundaries, as well as theoretical and artistic exchange around art, the body, and politics. Its goal is to develop a sustainable, structure-aware research laboratory, a research site and presentation platform for performative art forms, and a network for artists operating within the tensions of emancipatory artistic creation and art production oriented toward economy and market.

Im_flieger received the 2005 Innovation Award for international cooperation projects from the Independent Cultural Scene of Vienna for Terrains Fertiles 05, a European program for young choreographers. As an independent association, Im_flieger receives financial support from the Vienna City Council for four years, the Federal Ministry of Arts, and other project-oriented partners. www.imflieger.net

• 1 month residency in the space, about 20 hours per week
• Possibility to request mentoring, feedback, or external perspective
• Promotion of the residency and the work in progress
• Organization of a showcase, event, or public opening of the developed materials
• Audiovisual materials (photo and video) of the events
• Review of the showcase written by a professional
• Possibility to participate in all activities organized by nunart during the residency week
